QUALIFICATION REVIEW - HUMAN ABILITY

Seeking employers and employees input via a one-on-one interview to inform the Sterilisation Services Qualification Review.
HumanAbility have recently launched a review of the Certificate III in Sterilisation Services and Certificate IV in Sterilisation Services qualifications to align them with contemporary practice, the latest technology and increased emphasis on quality requirements. The qualification reviews will support the training of sterilisation technicians and sterilisation technician team leaders. The review provides an opportunity to ensure training products serve the dynamic nature of the sterilisation industry.
HumanAbility undertakes employer interviews to understand the current and emerging needs of organisations across the sector. Interviews include discussions regarding current roles, daily tasks, skills, and career paths to understand what is commonly used across organisations and what is unique to individual organisations.
Information from the interviews is used to develop a report to assist HumanAbility to understand how to structure qualifications and ensure that training is closely aligned with industry and sector requirements.

World Celebrates "CSD DAY"

Correspondence to share - Send photo's & have them posted to WFHSS & Qld SRACA web sites.

Happy World Sterilisation Day – on April 10th!

This day is to shine a spotlight on the incredible sterilisation technicians and reprocessing teams across the globe.
You are the ones who make sure every instrument that touches a patient is clean, safe, and ready to go. Your work might happen behind the scenes, but without you, there is no safe surgery, no smooth recovery, no patient confidence. It takes skill, focus, and a real passion for doing things right - every single time.

It’s not just about reprocessing; it’s about protecting lives, supporting teams, and keeping healthcare moving forward.

So on this day, I want to say a massive “THANK YOU”.
Thank you for the early mornings, the late nights, the attention to every tiny detail.
Thank you for being the quiet strength behind patient safety.
Thank you for the pride you bring to this vital work.
You are true healthcare heroes, and you deserve to be seen, heard, and celebrated — not just today, but every day.

I invite you to share your World Sterilisation Day celebrations with the world by sending the celebrations to: info@wfhss.comwhere it would be my privilege to share and feature your contributions on the WFHSS website and social media channels.

Hello

Today, we proudly celebrate World International Sterile Science Day, a day dedicated to the often-unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure our hospital remains a safe and sterile environment for all.

Your precision, vigilance, and commitment form the foundation of patient safety. Every surgical instrument you sterilize, every protocol you uphold, and every standard you exceed directly contributes to lives saved and infections prevented.

Sterile science may be invisible to many, but its impact is immeasurable.

On behalf of the NZSSA, thank you for your dedication, attention to detail, and the quiet excellence with which you perform your roles. Today, and every day, we appreciate you.

Happy World International Sterile Science Day!

Nga mihi,

Martin Bird

Communicable Diseases Branch Queensland Infection Prevention and Control Unit - QIPCU Email update

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to this week's QIPCU Newsletter.

Message from Queensland Chief Infection Control Nurse

  1. Standards update

Please find further standards update for your information.

While the remit of the newly established QIPCU is to provide IPC advice, we acknowledged that sterilising is a highly specialised area, and we are not subject matters experts for sterilising.

The Standards Australia AS 5369:2023 Reprocessing of reusable medical devices has been released. This updated Standard combines and supersedes both 4815:2006 and 4187:2014. It is likely that the changes will largely relate to those implementing 4815:2006.

The Commission is reviewing Standard AS5369 to identify key changes and will consider timeframes and if transitions arrangements will be required. This will be communicated to the system.

In the meantime, Advisory AS18/07: Reprocessing of reusable medical devices in health service organisations remains current and describes the minimum requirements and timeframes for health service organisations  to comply with Action 3.17 in the NSQHS Standards.

Where the requirements for segregation and storage cannot be met by 31 December 2024, extensions can be sought from the Commission. These will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

As part of the submission process, regulator support will be sought, and organisations are encouraged to check licensing agreements to establish if applications and approvals for capital works are also required.

If you have any follow-up questions or require clarification, please contact the Commission’s Safety and Quality Advice Centre via reply email or call 1800 304 056.
